The musical instrument collection of Radhika Mohan Maitra (1917-1981) – at Casa de la India, Spain

About the talk:

The display at Casa de la India, Spain, of this selection of 52 heritage instruments heritage from the Radhika Mohan Maitra collection is the first of this scope outside India. It is exhibited at the Ravi Shankar Auditorium at the historical building of Casa de la India in Valladolid, Spain, with living heritage as the central theme, including an introduction to Indian music, the history of each instrument and sound samples. A detailed description of the making process, anecdotes and the journey of Somjit while collecting the instruments will be part of this presentation which will include sound clips and photographs .

Somjit DasGupta has dedicated his whole life in preserving this collection which is not only associated with Radhika Mohan Maitra but also includes his guru Mohammed Ameer Khan, Enayet Khan  and other great musicians of yesteryears.

Oldest among the fretless lute instruments in the collection displayed is a mid-17th century Rudra Veena which belonged to descendants of Mian Tansen. It is still performed by Somjit Dasgupta today and is most likely the oldest playable musical instrument in India.
